One brand I particular we would like to showcase is Swiss watch manufacturer Ulysse Nardin. Ulysse Nardin was founded in 1846, and is world renowned for their complications, especially marine chronometers. One particularly fascinating, and mechanically outstanding timepiece from Ulysse Nardin is the Freak 28800 Vh Diamond Heart, a watch that takes a team of Ulysse Nardin craftsmen six weeks to create.
This limited edition of 99 pieces in a sense has both “brains and beauty”. Its “brains”, or mechanics are very complex, and some of the best haute horology has to offer. The Freak is aptly named since it is somewhat of a “freak” in the world of horology. This timepiece’s mechanics are all literally on display on the watch’s dial. The watch’s mechanics include a 7-day Carrousel-Tourbillon, an exclusive Ulysse Nardin dual escapement in diamond, and a remarkable dial without the standard hands and crown.
Instead of using hands to tell the time, this timepiece was made to have the Dual Direct Escapement act as the time telling hands. This specially crafted escapement is made up of 2 wheels which transmit energy directly to the watch’s balance wheel. They do this by each rotating in the same direction and connecting alternately with the balance. Despite being made without a crown, the Freak 2800 Vh Diamond Heart has a caliber of UN-201, and must be manually wound. The watch is wound from the manual winding mechanism over the caseback, which also has a lock device to ensure the watch is not accidentally wound.
Part of the Freak 2800 Vh Diamond Heart’s beauty can be attributed to its mechanics being on display. This aspect of the watch gives it a unique look, and allowed Ulysse Nardin to showcase the complications they produced in an aesthetically pleasing manner. The 44.5mm case is somewhat hefty, being made from solid platinum set with 284 round shaped white diamonds. The dial is deep blue, and in its center lays the Dual Direct Escapement, which appears to be a large hand. Open closer examination, one would notice that pictures of diamonds are etched into the escapement alongside a sprinkling of real diamonds at the tip. To finish off the watch’s lavish look, Ulysse Nardin added a midnight blue crocodile leather strap with a deployant clasp.
