Since 1995, Omega has been associated with James Bond since GoldenEye in 1995. They didn’t start creating limited edition James Bond watches until 2002, for the 40th anniversary of the world’s most famous secret spy. Their latest piece goes to promote the upcoming Skyfall, which is set for an October release, marking Daniel Craig’s third round as 007.
This watch follows up closely to the Omega Seamaster James Bond 50th Anniversary watch released earlier this year. The Skyfall limited edition is a more subdued tribute to Bond, making it less a piece of memorabilia and more wearable than the 50th Anniversary limited edition. It uses the smaller Planet Ocean size at 42mm for its brushed and polished stainless steel case (the larger case measures 45.5mm).
A matte black ceramic machined-checkered dial and rotating bezel gives a nice stealth look. Since this is a dive watch, the normally white Super-Luminova emits a blue light for the hours and seconds, with a green light for the minutes and diving bezel dot, give a bright contrast against the dark dial underwater. The silver indices also use Super-Luminova for night or under water viewability. This dive watch includes a helium release valve with a water resistance rating to 2000 feet/600 meters. It also features Omega’s new Co-Axial 8507 movement and comes in a James Bond branded box.
The Skyfall limited edition marks a more subdued tribute to Bond, with just the 7th hour replaced by the 007 logo, along with the same logo engraved on the rotor (seen through the crystal caseback) and the diving clasp. This allows Daniel Craig to actually wear this watch in the upcoming movie, without it being too overtly promotional. It makes it more wearable in real life, with it only noticeable up close, but less a piece of memorabilia and than the heavily branded 50th Anniversary limited edition, which appeals mainly to big 007 fans.
