Blancpain X Fathoms

X Fathoms by Blancpain

This intimidating new version of Blancpain’s popular dive watch, the Fifty Fathoms, brings in new technology to fill its huge case. The brushed titanium case measures in at 55.65mm, providing high structural strength, room for the added mechanical functions and excellent readability underwater. The new X Fanthoms includes a mechanical depth gauge that can measure diving depths up to 90 meters/295 feet (inner yellow dial), with a separate blue 15 meter scale that is accurate to 30 centimeters (outermost dial). For decompression stops, there is a 5 minute retrograde counter at the 10 o’clock position. And this dive watch is water-resistant to an staggering 300 meters/984 feet.

It also features a helium decompression valve for saturation diving. The vents on the back you see are part of the mechanical depth gauge. The strap is also worth nothing, which Blancpain says is the most complex injected rubber strap ever, using 14 specific parts to guarantee a perfect fit while not impairing the watch’s dive functions.

Villeret Traditional Chinese Calendar

Blancpain Villeret Traditional Chinese Calendar

With the luxury watch market in China’s continuing to grow with no sign of slowing down and it being the Year of the Dragon, many watchmakers have catered to that market with special timepieces. While many other brands have released traditional themed Chinese watches, this is the first to feature a traditional Chinese calendar function. First, it features the time, a moonphase indicator along with the standard western calendar, shown with a blue hand around the outer rim of the dial.

Movement in the Blancpain Chinese Calendar watch

For the Chinese features, the 12 o’clock position shows double-hour numerals and symbols for a day cycle, with a aperture showing the Zodiac sign. The 3 o’clock subdial displays the elements and the celestial stems 10 year cycle. 9 o’clock displays the 12 month Chinese calendar with its 3 day cycle. With the differences between the western and Chinese calendar, a impressive new movement was necessary for this watch. Available in a red gold or platinum 45mm case, with only 20 platinum versions to be produced.
