With all the great new watches show at the recent SIHH event, one new model worth sharing that I missed was the new Piaget Gouverneur Moon Phase Tourbillon. The Gouverneur watch is actually a new version of the original Gouverneur first released in
the 1990s. The most interesting new Gouverneur model features the world’s thinnest shaped tourbillon.

The Piaget Gouverneur uses a 43mm circle case, an oval bezel and a circles used for the dial, center, tourbillon and moon phase. This all adds up to a distinct but subtle look. When you examine the flying tourbillon at the top, you’ll see a Piaget “P” stamped into the rotating design. With a moving mechanical piece that small, maintaining balance with the non-symmetrical “P” shape, is quite a feat in itself. And the tourbillon is a miniscule 2.8mm thin, weighing only 0.2 grams. It rotates once every minute, which also lets it act as a seconds hand. The silvered dial is decorated with a sunburst guilloche motif, and is detailed with thin 18 karat pink gold circles and hour-markers, with a matching frame for the open tourbillon. The small but clear moon phase indicator is also done in pink gold, remarkable needing a one-day correction every 122 years.
The flying tourbillon is expertly finished by hand, with a hand-drawn and bevelled carriage, hand-drawn, bevelled and circular-grained titanium bridges and a circular-grained mainplate. It is finished with a circular Cotes de Geneve pattern, with blued screws, with the total thickness of the movement only 4.5mm. It is hand-wound for a 40 hour power reserve and beats at 21,600 vibrations per hour. The caseback reveals the movement through a sapphire crystal window, letting you admire the work from behind.
Besides the 18 karat pink gold case seen above, below is the 18 karat white gold version with a diamond-set bezel, totaling 128 brilliant-cut diamonds at 1.4 carats. To meet the elegant oval and circle shape, the diamonds grow from single rows at the top and bottom to double rows on the sides. The pink gold version includes a brown alligator strap and the white gold with a black alligator strap.
