After a few years of rumors and mentions, the “Hillary Tenzing Edition” is finally available. This cool set includes three custom vintage-inspired Explorer watches, plus several accompanying mementos and case. This collectors set is not an official release by Rolex, but a special project by the sons of famed explorers Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. This pair are best known for being the first to climb to the top of Mount Everest, while wearing Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches. The iconic Rolex Explorer watch was launched shortly after as a tribute to them and to meet the needs of explorers everywhere. This set is a tribute to the explorers’ accomplishments and an homage to Rolex’s for the role it played.
The sons of the famed explorers, Peter Hillary and Jamling Tenzing Norgay, both followed in their father’s footsteps. They two have both climbed to the peak of Everest, while both sporting Rolex Explorer II watches. For the “HTE” set, modern Rolex models were used, but modified to give the heritage look of the original watch used and 1050s Rolex watches. The HTE 36mm is based on the Oyster Perpetual that Hillary and Norgay wore on their 1953 Everest expedition. The HTE 39mm is made from the Explorer I, which honors Sir Edmond Hillary and son Peter for being the first and second generation to reach the peak of Mount Everest. With Peter and Jamling both wearing Explorer II watches on their joint climb of Everest, the new Explorer II is used for the HTE 42mm. Alternate leather, canvas and steel straps are also included.
It also comes with a range of recreated mementos of the original expedition. There is a leather-bound map of the original 1953 expedition route, a limited edition of the book Everest by the late George Band, a matching silver mountaineering pin and a leather tool kit. There are other items includes, all kept in a beautiful, hand-made wood crate, with drawers for it all.
The Hillary Tenzing Edition is limited to only 88 sets. And any lucky owners are invited to actually join Peter Hillary and Lamling Tenzing Norgay on a private trek to the Everest base camp.
