Harry Winston Inc. is an American jeweler and producer of Swiss timepieces named after its founder famed jeweler Harry Winston. Founded in 1932, Harry Winston Inc. has a history that is just as colorful as the beautiful jewelry and gemstones they are known for. During his career, Harry Winston built a jewelry empire, and was known for having some of the most prized gemstones in the world. These include amazing stones such as the Hope Diamond, the Jonker, the Lesotho, etc.
Despite their longstanding fame in the jewelry world, in the world of Swiss watch making, Harry Winston Inc. is a bit of a newcomer. The company first started producing luxury timepieces in 1989, and opened up a state of the art manufacturing facility in 2007 in Geneva, Switzerland. However, similar to other “new” high end watch brands such as Hublot and Richard Mille, Harry Winston Inc. proved they could be considered viable competitors in the horological world.
One absolutely amazing, and currently in stock, and ready to be shipped timepiece from Harry Winston is the first edition of the Histoire de Tourbillon 500/MMT48WZL. This limited edition of 20 timepieces is not only technologically incredible, but aesthetically as well. With its strong masculine looks and slight futuristic twist, this watch proves it is certainly for an extraordinary gentleman. Visually this piece is quite interesting. It is not uncommon for a high-end timepiece to have functions such as the standard hours, minutes and seconds on the watch’s dial, and a transparent caseback to show of the watch’s complications. This watch has indication of hours, minutes and the Tourbillon on the dial, while hours, minutes, and seconds indication is also featured on the caseback.
It has a very large 48mm case made of white gold and zalium, a zirconium-based alloy exclusive to Harry Winston timepieces. Zalium is an ultra light-weight material that makes it so that despite its large size, the Histoire de Tourbillon is light weight, and durable. It even has a water resistance to 30 meters/~100 feet. To finish off its looks, Harry Winston Inc. gave the watch a large black crocodile leather strap.
One can tell by simply looking at the Histoire de Tourbillon that it is an exceptional timepiece. It features not one, but two single axis Tourbillons on the dial with 36 second rotations that neutralize any effects of gravity. The master craftsmen at Harry Winston Inc. created sculptural elements which create the illusion that the Tourbillons are moving towards the watch’s sapphire crystal, while a play on reflecting light further increases the appearance of movement.
